Badges / Benchmarks Improvements

I think badges are a wonderful way to motivate people and so I'd like to see more ways to use badges.

I think we should be able to create (and maybe even share!) new badge designs. I also would like to be able to tie badges into specific Initiatives or Opportunities, or Qualifications, with optional Hour and Date requirements, and even a manual badge option.

For example, these are the kind of badges I would like to be able to create:

  • New Volunteer! (any approved hours, any time)
  • Days of Caring Superstar! (specific Initiative, minimum 10 hours)
  • Thanks for Bringing a Friend! (manual - if a new volunteer indicates another volunteer got them interested)
  • Attended Orientation! (based on approved qualification)
I'm sure there could be many more!

I like the idea of creating CUSTOM badge designs as well as tieing badges to something other than hours.  There are other ways our volunteers contribute other than hours.  Tieing to initiatives/needs would be great.  Or even just having our own internal metric that we can create a badge for and award it when they have reached our metric.

Hi Beth,

Thank you for sharing your feedback in our product suggestions forum! Are you hoping to recognize volunteers using some other marker besides hours? In what new ways would you like to see volunteers recognized?

I look forward to hearing from you!

All the best, Caitlin

Adding my voice to all of the above. We like to recognize volunteers in many different ways and hours. It would be great to create our own benchmarks.

Hi Vanessa,

Awesome, thank you for clarifying! I've added your suggestions as follows:

  • "Reward a badge for each year since a user joined the site."
  • "Reward a benchmark for monthly activity "streaks" on a site. This could go along with hitting a certain number of hours submitted within a given month, for multiple months in a row."

And I also updated the agency benchmarks suggestion to include responses made.

Thanks again for your input here!

Hi Shonie!

When you say that you’d like to award users for volunteering with a specific program/agency, is this in relation to having a specific number of hours attributed to need/opportunities that are posted by a specific agency?

I think that having specific hours by program/agency would be great for benchmarks.  However, they don't necessarily need to be by hour. It could also be by responses - helping out a particular program/agency earns you a badge.

what do you recognize as being an “active” user on your site? Would you like an option for a benchmark to be given after a certain amount of time after they’ve signed up on your site or does being “active” relate to something else you had in mind?

I think an active volunteer could be done by continuously responding and hours.  If they log any type of hours for one month in a row, two months in a row, etc. I also think a badge for being signed up to the site at each year anniversary would be a good benchmark too.

Hi Wendy and Josie,

Thanks for both your input! I think I have an idea of what you both are asking for here. Please review my notes for our team log below and let me know if I'm missing anything:

  • "The ability to create benchmarks that are given for approved hours attributed to a specific agency or program."

And Josie's:

  • "Benchmarks that are rewarded for the number of times a volunteer has submitted approved hours (number of times a volunteer has volunteered) rather than the number of total hours."

I'd like the ability to reward volunteers based on the number of times they've volunteered too.

Yes. That would be specifically having hours logged and approved to a specific agency or group of agencies. (As opposed to responses - we're looking to track only actual work done). So, an award and a way to track progress toward logging volunteer hours in each of the programs in our agency.

Hi Vanessa,

Thanks for commenting on this post about improving our benchmarks feature! Because your response is chopped full of great ideas, I want to make sure I am capturing and giving proper attention to each of them.

I’ve gone ahead and added your voice to our current notes regarding customizing benchmark badges for branding purposes. I’ve done the same with notes on expanding our options for what benchmarks can be used to recognize users for, outside of hours.

I do have a couple of questions to clarify my notes for our team! When you say that you’d like to award users for volunteering with a specific program/agency, is this in relation to having a specific number of hours attributed to need/opportunities that are posted by a specific agency?

Additionally, what do you recognize as being an “active” user on your site? Would you like an option for a benchmark to be given after a certain amount of time after they’ve signed up on your site or does being “active” relate to something else you had in mind?

For the rest of your post, I have put those thoughts into two different enhancement requests as follows:

  • “Ability to create general benchmarks not associated with any feature or data on the site. These would be to make note of various awards users may have accrued outside of the software, such as volunteer awards or different recognition for example.”

  • “Addition of a description field for benchmarks in order to give more context to them as well as make them even more customizable and unique.”

Let me know if those sound good to you and what you think! Thanks!

Hi,

I'd also like to echo the recommendations of above.

It would be great to be able to customize the look of the badges to fit with our organization's branding.

Having options for benchmarks that are not hour specific is needed to use this gamification feature to it's full extent. For example, benchmarks awarded for volunteering for a specific initiative would be great, or a specific program/agency.  Or a benchmark based on how long they've been active on the site.  Manual benchmarks that site managers can award would be a great feature as well and allow us to acknowledge volunteers for specific things, such as winning a volunteer award.

I'd also like to include a description of the benchmark, rather than just the title. This way we can make the message for each benchmark more unique.

Thanks!

Hi Josie,

Thank you for your support with this suggestion! This is definitely one that does come up quite often with the team, as it is a popular idea we want to have happen!

Of course, lately we have been focused on updating bigger pieces in our software. That being said, it is on our radar and we hope to be able to have this as an option for our site managers down the road. Thank you for expressing interest, the more backing a suggestion gets the better chances it has of happening!

I will add your voice to our enhancements board and continue to bring this up with our team.

I'd like to echo all the comments above. It would be amazing to customize the badges to our branding and the messaging we use across the agency.

Also, has there been any progress made on customizing the badges?

Hi, Morgan!

Thanks for chiming in on this topic and involving yourself in our forum community. I'll definitely notate that you would like the ability to create custom badges to reflect the branding of your organization and pass this along to our team who will be working on any upcoming enhancements.

This would be a much better feature if the badges could be customized to our organizations branding and to amplify the great work of our volunteers.

Hi Wendy,

If the volunteers are not logging hours, how do you know they are participating actively? This will help me add a little detail to your request. Currently you can do a benchmark for specific user groups, this could be a way to make sure that there are benchmarks specific to each passage unless hours are not how you are tracking participation.

Thanks!

I have also mentioned in the past that ways to track volunteers who participate with different agencies (in my case passages) or doing different tasks would be helpful. I currently have a custom report I can pull, but there's no way for the volunteer to track their own participation in this way. We have an award for people who volunteer on all 43 passages - it would be helpful to be able to track that in the volunteer resume.

This would be useful for us as well since we reward our volunteers on different levels than what is displayed with the current benchmarks. I'm glad y'all are adding this to the list of enhancements. Thanks!

Hi Beth, thanks for reaching out. New and custom badges are on our list of enhancements, and I will be sure to bring them up in our enhancements meeting next week. I can't give you a date that these might be implemented, but I will make sure my team knows how important this request is to some of our admins.

Have a great day!

Has there been any action on this? I really think this is something that would benefit a lot of sites.

Hi Laura,

Thank you for your question! At this time, Benchmarks can only be attributed to a volunteers hours. These Benchmarks can be set up site-wide or for individual user groups. If a volunteer participates in an Initiative, and there is a Benchmark set up for the site or their user group, then they will receive credit toward their benchmark when they record their hours. I hope this helps!

Cheers!

Are we still unable to tie a benchmark to an initiative?

Hi Beth and Molly,

What an interesting idea Beth! Molly, Beth is talking specifically about the Benchmarks feature. Being able to goal set a certain amount of hours and award a badge when a volunteer achieves those hours but having it be specific to an opportunity, initiative or qualification. Currently, you can either have a benchmark be general for everyone or tied to a specific user group. Would you want just the icon Molly or are you interested in the full functionality of benchmarks?

I'll document your idea Beth and add it to our list for development. Thanks for posting!

I like the idea of creating an icon that could be added to opportunities or organizations - is that a badge? It would be managed only by admin. This might help solve our problem of using initiatives for that very specific role now.
