Edit to 'custom time' clock functionality in Check-in Kiosk

Hello!

Our organization is in our 2nd month of using Galaxy, and we have multiple sites that have been using the Check-in Kiosk on-site to log volunteer hours.  For the most part, it is going well, but the biggest issue we've had is with user-errors when using the clock when entering a 'custom time' at check-in or check-out.

The clock is too finicky and sensitive - if a user scrolls using the mouse, the date may change, or the time changes a lot, and their time is entered improperly.  It is also frustrating to the user that it's not a QUICK couple of clicks to enter their time.

I suggest the development team take a look at the UI for time entry, and make some much-needed improvements to allow for a more simple and user-focused time entry interface.

Hi Allison,

I apologize for my very late response to your last comment! I've added your last insights about your older volunteers to the current notes we have about this request. I always appreciate when an admin is looking out for their volunteers of any age.

You have probably put in place a way to combat this with your users, but alternatively they are always able to utilize the "Check In/Out Now" or the "Check In/Out at Shift Start/End Time" options in this dropdown, too.

I hope you have a great rest of the day, thank you as always!

Thanks for adding it to the suggested enhancements.  I really think this should change because it doesn't make sense intuitively, especially to our older age volunteers.  Not using the keyboard is really hard for them, and we're not present with them while they check in, so there have been many errors while entering their time.

Hi Allison,

Thanks so much for the stop-by-step explanation. I can see what you are experiencing now! This was a bit confusing to me, so I asked one of our Development team members about this functionality.

In this instance, the keys that apply to the calendar popup take precedence over what's in the editing field. So, when you press something like the right arrow key, the calendar popup interprets it as 'go to the next date in the calendar' instead of the text editor interpreting it as a 'go the next character'.

This is the way it is currently set up to work, so I recommend not using the key pad when editing within the date field and sticking to using the mouse if you can. In the meantime, I have logged this in our enhancements notes to go over with the team. Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

Our team has been using it on a computer as well.  The issue with dates scrolling comes up when you select the custom time box, and if you don't want to use the date and time pop-up module, and click into the box itself intending to type your specific time or date.  If you do this, and then use the keyboard arrows to move the cursor to the left or right, the module is still popped up and it changes the date.

Hi Allison,

Thanks for adding your thoughts here, in our forums. We are constantly trying to improve tools like our check-in kiosk, so I appreciate the detailed explanation and provided screenshot.

Just so I have all the details for my notes that will be shared with the team, can you tell me what device you are using for your check-in kiosk? For example, are you using a tablet of some kind that it is pulled up on?

I mainly want to ask because I tested this on my lap top browser and could not replicate the time changing with my mouse or touchpad. This isn't to say this isn't an issue, however! It may depend on the device, so I want to make sure we're covering our bases.

Thanks for your help!
